What is the Duolingo Year in Review?

The Duolingo Year in Review is an annual summary of all your important Duolingo stats.

It’s spread across 10 pages and gives you details on things like how much XP you earned, your longest streak, as well as where you rank compared to other Duolingo users.

It’s available on all platforms (so that’s IOS, Android, and Web) and can be accessed throughout December.

How to get the Duolingo Year in Review

The Duolingo Year in Review should pop up automatically if it’s available on your account.

You can then access it from your learning path by tapping the button in the bottom left corner on mobile…

…or from your account tab on mobile and web…

Once opened, all you need to do is sit back, swipe through, and enjoy your Year in Review!

What are the different Year in Review stats?

Duolingo’s Year in Review summarizes your year in 8 different areas.

These are:

  • How many languages you completed lessons in…
  • How much XP you earned…
  • How many minutes you spent learning…
  • How many words you learned…
  • Your longest streak…
  • How many friends you have and how many times you congratulated them…
  • And finally, your unique learner style…

After you’ve completed your Year in Review, you can download and share a copy of your stat sheet, which contains a selection of your key stats…

What are the different learner styles?

Your unique learner style is determined by how much you used Duolingo over the year, as well as how you performed.

In 2023 there are 10 different learner styles:

  • World Champion – top 0.1% and 1% of learners…
  • Galactic Legend – top 2-3% of learners
  • Superstar learner – top 4-5% of learners…
  • Fiery Phoenix…
  • Long Streaker…
  • Party Owl…
  • Polyglot Pupil…
  • Know-It-Owl…
  • Budding Learner…
  • Night Owl…

World Champion, Galactic Legend and Superstar Learner are determined by how much XP you earned during the year. If you fall inside the top 5% of XP earners, then you’ll get one of these learner styles.

What are the special status icons?

And that’s not all.

If you fall inside the top 5% of Duolingo users, you’ll unlock a special, limited-time status icon to display next to your username in your weekly leaderboards!

As far as I’m aware, there are 4 limited edition status icons – 3 for the top 5% and 1 for everyone else:

  • World Champion…
  • Galactic Legend…
  • Superstar Learner…
  • Everyone else…

To unlock your status icon, you need to share your Duolingo Year in Review on social media or over text. It should then appear next to your username on the leaderboards and appear in your icon list (temporarily replacing the Dumpster Fire icon).

Status icon not working/showing

Not sure how to equip your special status icon? Or perhaps it’s not showing in your icon list?

If so, first make sure you’ve shared your Year in Review on social media or over text. It’s not always enough to just download it — somehow Duolingo knows whether you’ve actually shared it or not!

I had to share mine over Messenger before my icon popped up in my icon list.

Still not working? Some users have had to share a few times before the icon unlocks.

And if it’s still not working? Then it might be you’re one of the unlucky few that the status icon glitches for. From what I’ve read it seems to be mainly Android users. I’m not sure why this is, but hopefully it gets sorted soon.

Why you might not have your Year in Review

Haven’t received your Year in Review yet?

There could be a couple of reasons.

Firstly, Duolingo has been rolling the reviews out slowly this year. I got mine back at the start of November but most users had to wait until December. So it could be you just need to hold out a little longer.

However, if you haven’t received it by mid-December then that probably means you won’t be getting one. I can’t say for definite but it looks like you need to have completed a certain number of lessons or spent a certain amount of time on Duolingo throughout the year to qualify.
