Duolingo Daily Refresh – What It Is, How It Works

Duolingo’s Daily Refresh is a simple, yet often confusing, part of Duolingo’s language courses. The idea is to give you something ‘new’ to do on Duolingo each and every day by ‘refreshing’ content from earlier in your course.

So how do you get Daily Refresh? What does it mean once you’ve reached it? What comes next? Or does Daily Refresh represent the end of the road?

All shall be revealed. So let’s get into it!

What is Daily Refresh?

Daily Refresh is the last section on your learning path. It is available on all platforms and courses.

Unlike the main sections, which are mostly organised according to the CEFR, Daily Refresh is short collection of 6 levels that updates every day. These levels are pulled from the main course — so there’s nothing new here; everything you go through you will have encountered in the main sections of the course.

Depending on your course, these 6 levels are made up of personalised practices and stories. If your course doesn’t have stories, then you will get 6 personalised practices.

Just like in the main sections, each level can be completed to legendary.

The last level of your day’s refresh is a challenge that is supposed to contain harder exercises. Once you complete this, you’ll unlock an XP Boost.

Is Daily Refresh any good? Why does it seem so repetitive?

In theory, Daily Refresh is a nice idea. There’s always been a lot of confusion about what to do when you finish your Duolingo course. The obvious thing is to move over to a more advanced platform or start using your language in real-life scenarios. But a lot of users don’t want to leave the Duolingo environment and still want to participate in the game (e.g. leagues, quests).

Daily Refresh is a half-solution to this as it gives you something ‘new’ to do every day. (I put new in inverted commas as it’s not really new; it’s just stuff pulled from earlier sections of your course). It helps you to stay on top of your course content and gives you the chance to still compete in the weekly leagues.

But that’s as far as the good goes. Because in reality, it’s less Re-fresh and more Re-peat. Sure, it’s refreshing old content. But it quickly becomes very repetitive, particularly in courses that don’t have much content. You find yourself going over the same stuff over and over again, which, in many cases, is just basic A1 content.

This is one of the biggest gripes users have with Daily Refresh. It’s not uncommon to come across the same questions and vocabulary over and over again, making the whole experience pretty monotonous. So while Daily Refresh is designed to keep you coming back to Duolingo, over time, it can actually do more to push you away.

What to do when you reach Daily Refresh

Once you’ve hit Daily Refresh, you’ve reached the end of your course. That’s the bottom line.

At this point you’ve got a few options. If you want to keep using Duolingo, you can complete the Daily Refresh each day to unlock an XP Boost and stay competitive in your weekly leagues and contribute towards your friends quests.

However, just because you’ve hit the Daily Refresh part of the course, don’t think you have to do it. You can just go back through the earlier sections of the course and select the levels/units you’d like to focus on. You don’t have to leave it to Duolingo to decide for you!

If you’re on Super Duolingo or Duolingo Max, you can dip in and out of the Practice Hub and complete dedicated listening and speaking exercises (as well as Roleplays and Video Calls in select courses if you’re on Max). You can also try your hand at some timed challenges, available from the main sections of the learning path (by tapping on the adjacent Duolingo characters) or from the leagues tab.

However, if you’re keen to make progress in your target language and you’re happy to move on from Duolingo, you might want to explore some other platforms. At this point, you’re not going to learn any more with Duolingo unless they update the course, which, in a lot of cases, is far from guaranteed.

  1. So that means a course in Duolingo technically does not end? The daily refresh never ends, unless and until we leave Duolingo?

  2. It’s not that it feels repetitive because it uses the same content after a time, but because it always uses the same content, even if the cours would contain more different themes. Everytime I open it, it teaches me the same few sentences and it has been like this since I began to do daily refresh. I know every sentence in there by heart. There must be a better way to programme it.

  3. What happens if new content is added to the course after you’ve reached Refresh level? Does it restart the course for you?
Sometimes the Refresh doesn’t reset for the day, has that happened to you? Any way to force it to reset?

    1. I understand that it is repeating lessons I have done, but why is it the same story, day after day after day? My course had dozens of stories and yet every day, I get the same one. I don’t ever get to the end of the practice because I am so tired of that one story!

  4. I learn German and although I just finished section 3, Duolingo says that the course is finished and I only receive the daily refresh exercises…… German has more than 3 sections but I can’t get to section 4. Is there anything I can do?

    1. Duolingo has many more sections than 3. I first joined Duolingo in 2023 to take a course in German, but in August 2024 I was cut off in the middle of a section much further on than level 3 and there were many more sections to go as I’d previously checked. I am far from being fluent in German and I find the Daily Refresh a complete waste of time as it is so repetitive. However, there was nothing to say that I had finished the course, I was just flipped onto Daily Refresh. My biggest bugbear however, is that when you try to contact Duolingo for clarification, you’re simply ignored. Bug reports and emails seem to go into a black hole. If people are being cut off the courses at section 3 they cannot possibly have finished the course. It has to be a fault with the system and the technical team at Duolingo need to acknowledge this and apologise to their customers.

  7. Ik ben bezig met spaans, ook in sectie 3 en kom niet uit de refresh, wat erg eentonig is,bovendien heb ik de cursus nog helemaal niet afgerond, wat kan ik doen?

  8. I have the same problem with my italian course and cannot unblock it. Although ar the end of section 3 it is said that section 4 will follow but I cannot open it. Is this a system error ?

  9. I really dislike the daily refresh. Itโ€™s annoying especially when youโ€™ve just earned double points. I think it should be optional and in the review section. And as long as Iโ€™m complaining (almost five years in), why does the review of Words get so little points?

  10. I am also experiencing the same problem as many others describe. Once I finished my Russian course and started the Daily Refresh, it quickly became very repetitive. Exactly the same words and sentences every day in the first five lessons. The last lesson has much more variation but that it far too much new in one lesion, since I never get to learn it properly. The programmers at Duolingo should really be able to do a much better job when implementing the Daily Refresh functionality.

  11. They will never respond to this, the problem has existed for years. The Duolingo team is more focused on introducing pointless cosmetic features like animations and avatars. Your best bet is either manually decide which levels to revise, or, if you’re a geek, write a userscript that intercepts and tweaks the “/sessions” network request payload, the simplest approach being to give it a random bunch of level IDs to revise.

  12. My next subscription was taken just as I reached Daily Refresh. Therefore I have year of nothing new?

  13. I hate it. I pay for premium and I have a 500 daily strength that is unbroken however I do like to learn Japanese here and there but because I spend a lot of time away from it as opposed to my other languages they force me to do the daily refresher every single day these are not words that are actually refreshing my memory either these are things like hello water and Sushi things that I have said a million times in this app already this is something that actually makes me want to quit the app and I kind of hate Duolingo that they don’t let you skip this.

  14. I am so fed up with Daily refresh and canโ€™t move forward
I definitely havenโ€™t got to the end of the course so sky is this happening ๐Ÿ˜ก
